Deciduous climber, vigorous and twining. Showy clusters 25–35 cm long, with blue-violet flowers, from the second week of April, before the leaves—i.e., very early—blooming almost a week ahead of nearly all other species. It starts flowering from the 2nd–3rd year. Hardy in all soils except those with standing moisture.
